Murfreesboro, TN – Home and business owners looking to get their asphalt surfaces paved or have a new parking lot or driveway installed may still think that the asphalt paving process is the same laborious task as it was 20+ years ago. However, according to Hargrove Sealcoating, the internet is not the only place where technology has made a huge impact.

Representatives from Hargrove Sealcoating explain that site preparation, material removal, land grading, quality testing, and even preventative maintenance are not the same as they once were. New methods have made it easier for contractors to complete the paving process from start to finish.

Previously, contractors used a plumb bob and site glass to determine height differences that might affect the site preparation process. Today, contractors utilize laser-guided technology so they can plan elevation, grading, and drainage from long distances without guesswork.

In years past, the removal process involved a large diamond blade, which cut into existing asphalt surfaces. This left large chunks that were then removed by loading equipment. Asphalt paving professionals now utilize hydraulic technology to cut thin strips into an asphalt surface. This makes the removal process quicker and more effective.

Grading is now machine-controlled, which takes the human error variable out of the grading and sloping process. This is also helped by the use of a proof rolling machine, which lets contractors determine the structural soundness of the sub-base. Machine-guided grading and proof rolling allow contractors to create a smoother and more stable surface upon which to pave.

Hargrove Sealcoating further explains that the undercutting process has been made more efficient thanks to a product called the geo-grid. This is effectively a bridge that works to support the upper layer of concrete, and a contractor can install this just 18 inches below the surface instead of the traditional 36 inches or more. A geo-grid provides a stable base, even during the repair process.

Another important way that technology has made asphalt paving better for homes and businesses throughout the Nashville area, including Murfreesboro and other Middle TN cities, is that asphalt manufacturers can now quality test products based on the local climate. This makes it much easier for homeowners to keep up with maintenance, and it reduces cracking and other damage that might happen on a surface not prepared for a specific region.

Hargrove Sealcoating explains that new technology has made paving a more efficient and cost-effective process. They are excited to utilize many of the above technologies in their own Murfreesboro-based practice.
