Health is a condition of emotional, physical and mental well-being where infirmity and illness are absent. The definition has also been used to indicate the pursuit of well being, an idea that emphasizes the individual’s own interests in the maintenance of health. Health is necessary for happiness, although people pursue happiness in different ways. What most people consider to be health is usually reflected by the attitude of the society regarding health and its promotion. A healthy society values health as a basic necessity, hence the promotion of health.
Health involves every system, organ, tissue and muscle of the body. The five main articles of the human body that are associated with health are the bones, muscles, organs, blood and hormones. Stress, sleep deprivation, illness, diet and lifestyle are the main factors that cause ill health. The articles of the body are not fixed and cannot be restored; they can be improved by improving one’s health.
Illness can affect physical, emotional or mental health. It can be either chronic or acute. Chronic disease is a disease that lasts for more than six months. Acute disease is an inflammatory disorder or a bacterial or viral infection that results from an injury or trauma, normally resulting from violence or car accidents. Inflammatory disorders like arthritis, psoriasis and acne can last for a long time but do not affect physical well being.
Maintaining a wholesome mental state requires adopting a good and healthy lifestyle. Mental wellness includes the ability to learn, acquire new skills, acquire knowledge, solve problems, evaluate information and communicate efficiently. Adopting a healthy lifestyle will improve your self-esteem and make you more productive. Health can be defined as the state of complete physical, emotional and mental well being where illness or disease is absent. Health can be achieved through exercise, proper diet, a balanced lifestyle, and appropriate use of drugs when required.
Emotional Well-Being includes three aspects: psychological, physical and social aspects. Psychological aspects include your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, emotions, motivation, and behavior, and these all affect your physical health. On the other hand, the physical aspect covers all the components of your body including heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, digestive system, skin, and brain. Social aspects include social relationships, social competence, social norms, cooperation, conflict resolution, communication, interaction and conflict resolution.
A poor health status may be caused by the accumulation of mental stress, emotional stress, physical injury or illness, financial crisis, work related stress, unemployment, etc. Mental health disorders can be either acute or chronic. An individual can overcome the disorder if the source of stress is eliminated. Emotional and physical symptoms are manifested as headache, fever, anxiety, stomach pain, sleep disturbance, depression, muscle aches, headache, nausea, loss of appetite, body aches, fatigue, diarrhea, etc. In case of acute illness, the person may recover in a few days but in the case of chronic disorder, it can lead to serious complications. A combination of medication, lifestyle changes and therapy is effective in the management of the individual’s mental, emotional and physical illness and wellness.
